Gr. 7/8 #7802
Tone and Value
Supplies:
ruler,  eraser, compass, HB pencil and
8 1/2 x 14" white paper

Instructions: Applying pressure with a pencil, create a tonal value scale (white and black at the ends of the scale and four or more gradations between the ends) on the far left of the paper. Then, on the unused portion of the paper, create a design using geometric shapes that overlap each other. Assign a tone from the tonal scale to each shape. Apply the tone selected to each ahape and calculate the tonal  value of the overlapping portions of the shapes. Eg. if a shape with a light tone overlaps a shape with a dark tone, then the overlapped portion would be a medium tone.

Evaluation: The drawing should display the student's clear understanding of 1) geometric shapes, 2) a tonal value scale of pure white to black with each gradation's value between getting darker, 3) tonal value resulting from overlapping the shapes with various tonal values.
