Kackleberry or cackle berry, is a slang term that was commonly used many years ago, which means, “egg”. The word is a combination of the sound of a hen (cackle) and the resemblance of an egg to a fruit (berry). One of the best deals in town for an egg breakfast, often referred to the “Kackleberry Breakfast” is this café’s trademark. This $3.99 everyday breakfast special is served piping hot with two eggs, toast, a choice of bacon, ham, sausage or baloney, a choice of home fries or pancakes, and a choice of coffee with one free refill, tea or hot chocolate.
    Shannon Carrier, having worked in retail at the Market Mall for over 17 years and her mother Patty Forbes who worked in healthcare for Dr. John Pearson for 20 years, made a decision to open this neighbourhood café in December 2004. Before deciding to do so, Shannon’s employer planned to relocate her to another retail location in the east end of town but she declined because she wanted to continue working in this neighbourhood. Having walked by the vacant restaurant space in the mall numerous times, Shannon entertained the idea of becoming self-employed.
    Although Patty enjoyed her previous employment, she thought the time was right to realize a dream. Patty and Shannon decided to take on the challenge and Kackleberry’s Café became a reality. Shannon’s years in retail experience in the Market Mall has proven to be a valuable resource in knowing her customers and meeting their needs.
    With entrances inside the mall and outside, the café opens at 6AM on weekdays and 7AM on weekends. They offer a wide range of homemade meals including clubhouse sandwiches with real chicken breast and their very popular home cut fries. When you visit Kackleberry’s, don’t be surprised if you get caught up in a party and laughs because to this mom and daughter duo their customers are like family. They, along with their hardworking staff, enjoy celebrating customers’ birthdays and holidays of all sorts. Melissa (Shannon’s younger sister) also helps Mom, Big Sis and the staff with hard work and fun.
